The holidays brought out a spirit a giving from many generous hearts, and our homeless friends and neighbors benefited tremendously. One of our most generous donors was the BBVA Compass Bank, who combined corporate funds and local contributions to provide us with $3,600 in funds, and coupons good for 75 meals. Compass has changed corporate owners, but has not changed its commitment to the community, and to the highest ideals of customer service.

Opportunity Place could not survive without its sponsors. Our business partners bring skills, time, enthusiasm and much needed funds to every phase of our endeavor. This time the spotlight is on the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors, and the amazing work done by many of its members. ECAR hosted a dessert auction bringing in nearly $4,000 at a time when the need for funds were desperate.

Member agencies such as Pelican Real Estate provide not just funds, but hands-on service. Jackie Pilcher, Board Member, drops by the shelter frequently to assist residents to locate appropriate, affordable housing. Once residents have selected their top choices, Jackie works with the landlords to waive application fees, reduce deposits, and do whatever is necessary to get their clients into their own place. Jackie also works with residents to ensure they will have the funds to sustain life on their own.

ECAR and its member realtors work in the housing business everyday, and have a special heart for those for whom obtaining and maintaining shelter is a constant struggle in the time of high unemployment and rising loss of health insurance.
