Opportunity Place Renews Hope for Struggling Families
It seems like yesterday when the first small child ran into the Opportunity Place living room, joy in her eyes and hope in her heart, begging for a place to stay, but it has already been over two months ago. The anniversary was on September 7, but the occasion went unremarked. We have had so many other, more amazing days to celebrate.

Since July 7, we at the staff have been brought to witness:

  • A baby boy’s first smiles and laughter;
  • A baby girl taking her first steps;
  • A little girl celebrating her second birthday;
  • A small boy heading off for his first day of kindergarten.
Among the adults, we have shared the excitement of men and women getting meaningful, permanent employment; enrolling in vocational training; finding secure, affordable housing for their families. We have rejoiced as families have come to support each other, and together find a way to sustain themselves and each other. We have cried when doctors have brought bad news, and sighed in relief when diagnoses proved not as dire as first thought.

Fifteen families have left us, full of smiles and tears as they leave and lots of promises to keep in touch, though of course they won’t. They have new lives, new hopes, new dreams to pursue, and hopefully the fact that they were homeless will soon be a dim memory.

Meanwhile, new families have moved in, to take advantage of this time to develop the skills and find the resources necessary for them to move on as well.

None of this would be possible without the incredible volunteers who sustain us every day. We have volunteers doing intakes, making repairs, bringing dinner, organizing the donations that come our way. Some people have dropped out of nowhere to bring us boxes of items from our wish list, while others stop by with a single item or two that represented a significant chunk of their straitened discretionary income. One couple came like a whirlwind and purchased a freezer, beds and three pick-up trucks worth of supplies. Another drops by occasionally to tend the flowers.

No matter what you do, it will make a huge difference in someone’s life, and could well mean a brighter future for a child in need. Whether you can donate money, always in very short supply; or time, in even shorter supply; meals or needed donations, your help is appreciated and remembered. Click here to donate funds, or click here to find what is needed in terms of volunteer time and gifts. And thank you, for your concern and compassion for the least of these in our midst.
